With volunteer readers in 12 counties from Tallahassee to Miami, SAG Foundation Florida BookPALS read aloud to children in Title I schools every week. Florida BookPALS also read at libraries, hospitals, and shelters.
The imaginations of thousands of children have been sparked by the animated and engaging delivery of BookPALS. By sharing their love of story, character, language, and reading, SAG Foundation BookPALS make a real difference in the lives of Florida students, developing strong self-esteem and thoughtful verbal expression through discussion.
The SAG Foundation PencilPALS program originated in Florida. In an era of e-mail and text communications, Florida PencilPALS are working with students to chronicle their experiences in polished prose while keeping alive the art of letter writing. Not only do students gain a sense of pride in their writing by sharing stories with interested readers, but language skills improve when students make a habit out of writing.
“It is an exciting day for me when I see in the mailbox an envelope bearing my name written in the careful penmanship of one of my PencilPALS students,” says veteran PencilPAL Judy Babcock.
